So you have just bought or downloaded a Serum preset pack and you are staring at a zip file wondering what to do next. Do not worry, installing presets in Serum is straightforward once you know where things go. This guide covers every method for getting presets loaded up and ready to use.
Method 1: Drag and Drop (Quickest)
This is the fastest way to install Serum presets and works on both Mac and Windows:
- Open Serum in your DAW
- Unzip your downloaded preset pack
- Find the .fxp files (these are individual Serum presets)
- Drag any .fxp file directly onto the Serum interface
- The preset loads immediately
This method works for quick testing, but it does not organise your presets into the browser. For that, you want Method 2.
Method 2: Copy to the Presets Folder (Recommended)
This is the proper way to install presets so they show up in Serum’s built-in preset browser.
Step 1: Find Your Serum Presets Folder
Open Serum and click the menu icon (the three lines in the top right). Go to Show Serum Presets Folder. This opens the directory where all your presets live.
The default locations are:
- Windows: Documents/Xfer/Serum Presets/Presets/
- Mac: /Library/Audio/Presets/Xfer Records/Serum Presets/Presets/
If you have set a custom preset path in Serum’s settings, it will open that location instead.
Step 2: Create a Subfolder
Inside the Presets folder, create a new folder with the name of your preset pack. For example, if you downloaded the Preset Drive Free Taster Pack, create a folder called “Preset Drive – Taster Pack” or whatever name makes sense to you.
Step 3: Copy the .fxp Files
Unzip your downloaded pack and copy all the .fxp files into the subfolder you just created. Do not put folders inside folders – Serum reads one level of subfolders in the Presets directory.
Step 4: Rescan
Go back to Serum, click the menu icon again, and select Rescan folders for presets. Your new presets should now appear in the browser under the folder name you created.
Method 3: Using Serum’s Import Function
Some versions of Serum have an import option in the menu. Click the menu icon and look for Import Presets. Select your .fxp files and Serum will copy them to the correct location automatically.
What About .fxb Files?
Some preset packs come as .fxb files instead of .fxp files. An .fxb file is a preset bank, which is basically a collection of presets bundled into one file. To install these:
- Open Serum
- Click the menu icon
- Select Import FXB bank
- Navigate to your .fxb file and select it
- Serum will unpack all the presets and add them to your browser
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Presets not showing up in the browser
Make sure your .fxp files are in the correct Presets folder, not a subfolder of a subfolder. Serum only reads one level deep. Also try rescanning from the menu.
Preset loads but sounds wrong
Check your Serum version. Some presets require Serum 1.30 or later because they use wavetables or features that were not available in older versions. Update Serum from the Xfer website if needed. All Preset Drive packs are compatible with Serum 1.30 and above.
Missing wavetables
Some preset packs include custom wavetables alongside the .fxp files. These need to go in the Tables folder inside your Serum Presets directory, not the Presets folder. Check if your download includes a Tables folder and copy it to the right place.
Noise oscillator samples missing
Similar to wavetables, some presets use custom noise oscillator samples. These go in the Noises folder inside your Serum Presets directory.
Organising Your Preset Library
As your collection grows, keeping things organised saves a lot of time during sessions. Here are some tips:
- Name your folders by pack name or by genre (e.g., “DnB Basses”, “Dubstep Leads”)
- Use Serum’s favourites feature to mark your go-to presets with a star
- Delete presets you never use to keep the browser clean
- Keep your original zip files backed up somewhere safe
