How to Make Liquid DnB Pads and Atmospheres in Serum

The Sound of Liquid DnB

Liquid drum and bass is about beauty, emotion, and atmosphere. It is the side of DnB that makes you feel something beyond just wanting to dance. Lush pads, shimmering textures, and deep atmospheric sounds are what set liquid apart from the harder subgenres. And Serum, despite being known for aggressive bass sounds, is absolutely brilliant for creating these softer, more musical textures.

The key to great liquid DnB pads is movement and warmth. You want sounds that evolve slowly, breathe naturally, and fill the stereo field with rich harmonic content. Think of pads as the emotional backdrop of your track. They set the mood and carry the listener through the musical journey.

Building a Warm Pad Foundation

Start with OSC A loaded with a saw wave. Add 4-7 unison voices with moderate detune (around 0.20-0.35). This creates a rich, thick tone that forms the foundation of your pad. The saw wave is ideal because its harmonic content responds beautifully to filtering and modulation.

In OSC B, load a different waveform. A triangle or sine wave one octave higher adds brightness and shimmer on top of the saw foundation. Mix OSC B slightly lower than OSC A so it adds sparkle without dominating. Two oscillators with different characters create a more interesting, complex pad than a single oscillator alone.

Envelope Shaping

Pads need slow attack times. Set the amp envelope attack to 200-800ms so the sound fades in gradually rather than hitting instantly. The decay should be long (1-2 seconds), sustain at 70-80%, and release at 500ms to 1 second. This creates a gentle, swelling sound that lingers after you release the keys.

Use a second envelope (Env 2) on the filter cutoff with similar slow timing. Set a low-pass filter to cut high frequencies initially, then use the envelope to slowly open the filter as the note sustains. This creates a blooming effect where the pad gets brighter over time.

Adding Movement and Life

LFO Modulation

Assign a slow LFO (around 1-4 bars cycle) to the wavetable position if you are using a wavetable, or to the filter cutoff. The subtle movement keeps the pad feeling alive and organic. You should barely notice the modulation consciously, but without it, the pad would sound static and lifeless.

Add a second LFO at a slightly different rate to the fine pitch of one oscillator. A very subtle pitch modulation (plus or minus 5-10 cents) creates a gentle chorus-like effect that adds warmth and width naturally. Keep this extremely subtle. If you can clearly hear the pitch wobbling, it is too much.

Chorus and Ensemble Effects

In the Serum FX chain, add a chorus effect for instant width and lushness. Set the rate slow (0.3-0.8Hz), depth moderate, and mix at 30-50%. The chorus doubles the sound with slight pitch and time variations, creating a rich, ensemble-like texture.

If the chorus alone is not enough, add a gentle flanger with very slow rate and low feedback. This creates a subtle sweeping effect that adds extra dimension to the pad. Be careful not to overdo it because too many modulation effects can make the sound washy and undefined.

Reverb and Space Design

Reverb is essential for liquid DnB pads. You want a large, lush reverb that creates a sense of space and depth. In Serum built-in reverb, set the size to 70-90%, decay to 3-6 seconds, and mix at 40-60%. This places the pad in a huge, immersive space.

High-pass the reverb input at around 200Hz to keep the low end clean. Low frequency buildup in reverb makes everything muddy, especially at the fast tempos of drum and bass. You want the reverb to add atmosphere in the mids and highs while the lows stay tight and controlled.

Pre-Delay

Add a small pre-delay to the reverb (20-50ms). This creates a slight gap between the dry sound and the reverb tail, which helps the pad maintain clarity and definition even with heavy reverb. Without pre-delay, the reverb can wash over the original sound and make it blurry.

Creating Atmospheric Textures

Beyond traditional pads, liquid DnB uses a lot of atmospheric textures. These are sounds that create mood and ambience without being melodically prominent. In Serum, the noise oscillator is perfect for this.

Turn on the noise oscillator and choose a textured noise type like “BrightWhite” or “Rain.” Filter it with a band-pass and set a slow LFO on the cutoff. The result is a subtle, evolving atmospheric texture. Mix it very low underneath your main pad for added depth and organic quality.

Try using a granular or vocal wavetable with heavy reverb and delay for ethereal, otherworldly atmospheres. Process these through Serum effects chain with generous amounts of reverb, delay, and gentle filtering. These sounds work beautifully as background elements that add emotional weight to your productions.

Mixing Pads in a DnB Context

Pads need to support, not dominate. In a liquid DnB mix, the drums and bass should always be the focus. Mix your pads lower than you think they need to be. They should be felt more than heard, creating an emotional undercurrent beneath the rhythm.

Use sidechain compression to duck the pads against the kick and snare. This keeps the rhythm punchy and prevents the pads from masking the drum transients. A gentle sidechain (2-4dB of ducking) is usually enough.

EQ your pads to sit in the spaces between other elements. Cut any frequencies that clash with your bass (below 200Hz) and any frequencies that compete with your leads or vocals (typically 1-3kHz). The pads should fill the gaps, not compete with the main elements.
