What Dirty Bass Actually Means in Production
Dirty bass is not a genre. It is a production approach. Any bass sound can be made dirty through distortion, saturation, bitcrushing, and aggressive processing. The term describes bass that has been intentionally roughed up to sound raw, heavy, and aggressive rather than clean and polished.
Producers across drum and bass, dubstep, bass house, riddim, and UK bass all use dirty bass techniques. The intensity varies – from subtle tape warmth to full digital destruction – but the intent is the same: making the bass hit harder and feel more powerful.
Where Dirty Bass Shows Up in Electronic Music
Different genres apply the dirty bass approach differently:
- Drum and bass – Distorted Reese basses, gritty neuro patches, and aggressive mid-range sounds. Artists like Bou, Hedex, and Noisia built their sound on dirty bass processing
- Bass house – Saturated bass stabs with crunchy harmonics. The grit adds character to the groove-driven bass patterns
- Dubstep and riddim – Heavily processed wobbles, growl basses, and screech sounds. This is dirty bass at its most extreme
- UK bass – Warm but gritty basslines with controlled distortion. More restrained than dubstep but still deliberately rough
- Rave and breakbeat – Raw, unpolished bass hits and stabs. The lo-fi quality is part of the aesthetic

How to Make Bass Sound Dirty in Serum
Even with presets as your starting point, understanding dirty bass technique helps you customise further:
- Stack distortion types – Run tube saturation into hard clip for complex harmonic content
- Use the bitcrusher subtly – Small downsample settings add digital grit without making the sound unrecognisable
- Push filter resonance – High resonance creates harmonic peaks that add perceived aggression
- Blend noise – Serum’s noise oscillator can add texture and grit when mixed in at low levels
- Compress hard internally – Serum’s built-in compressor can push the signal for more aggressive dynamics
