Serum Presets FAQ – Everything You Need to Know

Serum Presets FAQ

Whether you are brand new to Serum or a seasoned producer looking for fresh sounds, this FAQ covers everything you need to know about using preset packs in your productions. If your question is not answered here, feel free to get in touch.

What are Serum presets?

Serum presets are pre-configured sound patches for Xfer Serum, one of the most popular wavetable synthesizers in music production. Each preset stores all the synth settings – oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs, effects and modulation – so you can load up a finished sound instantly without building it from scratch. At Preset Drive, our packs are designed specifically for bass music genres like DnB, dubstep and bass house.

How do I install Serum presets?

Installing Serum presets is straightforward. After downloading your pack, unzip the file. Open Serum in your DAW, click the menu icon in the top right, and select “Show Serum Presets Folder”. Drop the .fxp preset files into the appropriate subfolder (or create a new one). Restart Serum or rescan, and your new presets will appear in the browser. The whole process takes about 2 minutes.

Are Serum presets compatible with my DAW?

Yes. Serum presets work with any DAW that supports VST or AU plugins. That includes Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Studio One, Cubase, Reaper, Bitwig and more. As long as you have Xfer Serum installed and running in your DAW, the presets will work exactly the same regardless of which DAW you use.

What version of Serum do I need?

Our presets are built on Serum version 1.30b and above. We recommend keeping Serum updated to the latest version for full compatibility. If you are running an older version, some modulation routing or wavetable features might not load correctly. You can update Serum for free from the Xfer Records website.

What is the difference between free and paid Serum presets?

Free presets are a great way to test quality before buying. Our Free Bass Taster Pack includes 5 professional presets so you can hear the standard for yourself. Paid packs contain 20-50+ presets with more variety, deeper sound design, bonus wavetables, and genre-specific sounds that are mix-ready straight out of the box. The paid packs represent hundreds of hours of sound design work.

Are Serum presets worth buying?

If you value your time, absolutely. Building a single complex bass patch from scratch can take 30 minutes to an hour. A preset pack gives you dozens of production-ready sounds instantly, plus you learn sound design by reverse-engineering how they are built. For the price of a couple of coffees, you get sounds that would take weeks to create yourself. Check out our Dirty Bass Master Bundle for the best value.

What file format are Serum presets?

Serum presets use the .fxp file format. Some packs also include custom .wav wavetables. When you download a pack from Preset Drive, you will receive a .zip file containing all the .fxp presets organised into folders, plus any bonus wavetables and an installation guide.

Can I use these presets in commercial releases?

Yes, 100%. All Preset Drive presets come with a royalty-free licence. You can use them in your tracks, remixes, DJ sets, sync placements, Spotify releases – anything commercial. The only restriction is you cannot resell or redistribute the preset files themselves.

What genres do your presets cover?

We specialise in bass music. Our catalogue includes packs for drum and bass (Dirty DnB Vol.1, Vol.2), bass house (Dirty Bass House Vol.1, Vol.2), UK bass (UK Bass Vol.1, Vol.2), and rave/hardcore sounds (Dirty Rave Hitters Vol.1). New packs drop regularly.

Do you offer refunds on preset packs?

No. All preset packs are digital products and sales are final. Once a pack has been downloaded, we cannot offer refunds. This is standard practice for digital downloads across the industry. We recommend grabbing our Free Bass Taster Pack first to make sure you are happy with the quality before purchasing.

How many presets are in each pack?

Each individual pack contains between 20 and 50 presets depending on the volume. Our bundle packs combine multiple volumes for better value – the Dirty Bass Master Bundle for example includes every preset across multiple packs at a significant discount.

Do you have any discount codes?

Yes. New customers can use code FIRSTBEAT at checkout for 10% off their first order. We also run seasonal sales – check our shop page for any active promotions.
