Serum Presets for Beginners – Complete Getting Started Guide

Getting Started with Serum

Serum by Xfer Records is the most popular wavetable synthesiser in music production. Used by producers across every genre from Drum and Bass to Pop, Serum combines powerful sound design capabilities with a visual interface that makes it accessible to beginners.

If you have just installed Serum and feel overwhelmed by the options, this guide will help you understand what presets are, how to use them, and how to start making your own sounds.

What Are Serum Presets

A preset is a saved configuration of all the settings in Serum. This includes the wavetables loaded in the oscillators, the filter settings, envelope shapes, LFO configurations, effects chain and macro assignments. When you load a preset, all of these settings are recalled instantly, giving you a complete, playable sound.

Think of presets as recipes. Just like a recipe tells you exactly what ingredients to use and how to combine them, a preset tells Serum exactly how to configure every parameter to produce a specific sound.

How to Install Serum Presets

Method 1: Drag and Drop

The easiest way to install presets is to drag the .fxp preset files directly onto the Serum interface in your DAW. Serum will automatically copy them to the correct location in your preset library.

Method 2: Manual Installation

Copy the preset files to your Serum presets folder. The default location depends on your operating system:

  • Windows: Documents/Xfer/Serum Presets/Presets/
  • Mac: Library/Audio/Presets/Xfer Records/Serum Presets/Presets/

Create a subfolder with the pack name to keep things organised. After copying, click the refresh button in Serum or restart your DAW to see the new presets.

Method 3: Serum Settings

In Serum, click the menu icon and select “Show Serum Presets folder” to open the exact location where presets should be placed. This is the most reliable method since it shows you exactly where Serum looks for presets.

Understanding the Serum Interface

Oscillators

Serum has two main oscillators (OSC A and OSC B) plus a sub oscillator and a noise oscillator. The main oscillators can load any wavetable and you can scan through different positions to change the tone. The WT POS knob controls which part of the wavetable is currently playing.

Filters

The filter section shapes the frequency content of your sound. Low-pass filters remove high frequencies for darker sounds. High-pass filters remove low frequencies. Band-pass filters allow only a specific frequency range through. Use the cutoff and resonance knobs to shape the filter response.

Envelopes

Envelopes control how parameters change over time. The amplitude envelope (ENV 1) controls volume: Attack is how quickly the sound reaches full volume, Decay is how quickly it drops after the initial peak, Sustain is the level it holds while the key is pressed, and Release is how quickly it fades after the key is released.

LFOs

LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) create repeating modulation patterns. Assign an LFO to the filter cutoff for a wobble effect, to the wavetable position for timbral changes, or to the volume for tremolo. Serum has 4 LFOs that can be assigned to almost any parameter.

Effects

Serum includes a built-in effects chain with distortion, reverb, delay, chorus, flanger, phaser, compressor, EQ and more. These effects are applied after the oscillators and filter, adding character and polish to your sounds.

Your First Steps with Presets

Browse and Listen

Start by browsing through the factory presets included with Serum. Use the arrows at the top of the interface to step through presets. Play different notes and chords to hear how each preset responds. Pay attention to what makes each sound unique.

Study the Settings

When you find a preset you like, look at how it is built. What wavetables are loaded? What does the filter look like? How are the envelopes shaped? Understanding existing presets teaches you the building blocks of sound design.

Tweak and Experiment

Do not be afraid to change preset settings. Adjust the filter cutoff, change the LFO speed, turn effects on and off. You can always reload the original preset if you want to start over. Experimenting is the fastest way to learn.

Types of Presets for Different Genres

Bass Presets

Bass presets are essential for genres like Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Bass House and Trap. They range from clean sub basses to aggressive, modulated growls. Look for bass presets with mapped macros so you can easily adjust the character of the sound.

Lead Presets

Lead presets are designed for melodies and hooks. They tend to be bright, present and sit well above the bass in a mix. Supersaws, plucks and arps are common lead preset types.

Pad Presets

Pads provide atmosphere and background texture. They typically have slow attacks, long sustains and lush effects like reverb and chorus. Pads work well in breakdowns and intros.

FX Presets

FX presets include risers, impacts, sweeps and one-shot sounds. These are used for transitions, build-ups and adding energy to specific moments in your track.

Where to Find Quality Serum Presets

Beyond the factory presets, you can expand your sound library with third-party preset packs. When choosing presets, look for packs designed for your specific genre. A Bass House preset pack will serve you better than a generic collection if Bass House is what you produce.

Preset Drive offers genre-specific Serum preset packs for Drum and Bass, Bass House and UK Bass. Each pack is designed by experienced producers and includes detailed macro mappings for easy customisation.

Tips for Getting the Most from Presets

  • Use presets as starting points, not finished sounds
  • Always adjust presets to fit the key and tempo of your track
  • Layer presets together for thicker, more complex sounds
  • Add your own effects processing after Serum for a unique touch
  • Organise your preset library into folders by type (bass, lead, pad, FX)
  • Save your own modifications as new presets to build a personal collection

Conclusion

Serum presets are an invaluable tool for both beginners and experienced producers. They provide instant access to professional sounds and serve as excellent learning tools for understanding synthesis. Start with quality presets, study how they work, and gradually begin creating your own sounds.
