How to Use Serums Noise Oscillator for Texture

What Is the Noise Oscillator in Serum?

Serum noise oscillator is often overlooked, but it is one of the most versatile tools in the synth. Unlike the main wavetable oscillators that produce pitched, tonal sounds, the noise oscillator generates non-pitched or semi-pitched noise that adds texture, character, and realism to your patches.

The noise oscillator can load any audio sample as its source, not just noise. This opens up enormous creative possibilities. You can load white noise, vinyl crackle, vocal textures, foley recordings, or any other audio and blend it with your main oscillators. It runs through its own filter, has independent level control, and can be modulated just like the other oscillators.

Using Noise for Bass Texture

One of the most effective uses of the noise oscillator in bass music is adding texture to bass sounds. A pure synth bass can sound sterile and digital. Adding a layer of noise gives it an organic, analog-like quality that helps it sit better in a mix.

Subtle Noise Layering

Load a white noise or pink noise sample into the noise oscillator. Set the level low, around 10-20 percent of the overall output. Apply a bandpass filter to the noise to focus it in the mid-high frequency range, above where your bass fundamental sits.

This subtle layer of noise adds breath and life to the sound without changing its fundamental character. It is especially effective on sub basses and clean mid-range basses that need a bit more presence.

Aggressive Noise Textures

For more aggressive bass sounds, crank the noise level higher and use a different noise source. Try loading one of Serum crunchier noise presets or importing your own distorted audio sample. This creates a hybrid sound that combines the tonal bass with a gritty, textured top layer.

Creating Atmospheric Effects

The noise oscillator excels at creating atmospheric sounds, risers, transitions, and background textures that fill out your productions.

Risers and Sweeps

Load white noise into the noise oscillator and apply a high-pass filter. Automate or modulate the filter cutoff from low to high to create a classic riser effect. Add reverb for spaciousness and modulate the noise level with an LFO for a pulsing, rhythmic riser.

Ambient Textures

Import field recordings, rain sounds, or mechanical textures into the noise oscillator. Blend them subtly with pad or atmospheric presets for unique, immersive soundscapes. This technique adds depth to breakdowns and intros without requiring separate audio tracks.

Vinyl and Lo-Fi Character

Load a vinyl crackle sample into the noise oscillator and set it to a low level. This adds a subtle lo-fi character to any preset, giving it warmth and nostalgia. It works particularly well on pads, keys, and atmospheric sounds.

Noise for Percussion and Transients

The noise oscillator can create percussive elements and enhance transients in your synth patches.

Set the noise oscillator level to be controlled by an envelope with a fast attack and short decay (no sustain). This creates a burst of noise at the start of each note, adding a percussive click or snap to your bass or lead sounds. This is especially useful for making bass patches that are rhythmically defined and cut through a busy mix.

Experiment with different noise sources for different transient characters. White noise gives a sharp, bright click. Pink noise gives a softer, warmer attack. Custom noise samples can give you completely unique transient textures.

Loading Custom Samples into the Noise Oscillator

To load a custom sample, click on the noise oscillator sample name and select “Import” from the menu. You can load any WAV file. Serum will play it as a one-shot or looped sample depending on the settings.

Try loading vocal samples, drum hits, foley recordings, or even snippets of your own tracks. The noise oscillator will blend these with your main oscillators in real time, creating hybrid sounds that are truly unique.

This technique is used extensively in professional preset design. Many high-quality presets use custom noise samples to add character that cannot be achieved with standard noise alone.
