What Is Multiband Compression in Serum?
Serum has a built-in multiband compressor in its FX chain, and it is one of the most underused tools in the synth. Multiband compression splits your signal into separate frequency bands and compresses each one independently. This means you can tighten up your sub bass without squashing your mids, or control harsh high frequencies without affecting the low end.
For bass music producers, this is incredibly useful. Bass sounds often have complex harmonic content spread across a wide frequency range. A standard compressor treats the entire signal as one, which can cause pumping, loss of transients, or uneven dynamics. Multiband compression solves these problems by giving you surgical control over each frequency range.
Setting Up Multiband Compression in Serum
To add multiband compression in Serum, go to the FX tab and enable the Multiband Compressor (labeled “Compressor” with the multiband option). You will see three bands with adjustable crossover points.
Setting Crossover Points
For bass music, a good starting point is to set the low crossover around 120-150 Hz and the high crossover around 2-3 kHz. This gives you a dedicated low band for sub frequencies, a mid band for the body and growl of your bass, and a high band for presence and air.
Adjust these crossover points based on the specific sound you are working with. If your bass has a lot of content around 200 Hz, you might want to raise the low crossover to include that in the mid band instead.
Compression Settings for Each Band
Low Band (Sub Frequencies)
For the sub range, use moderate compression with a ratio of about 3:1 to 4:1. Set a medium attack time so transients come through, and a medium release to keep things smooth. The goal is to even out the sub level without killing the dynamics completely. Consistent sub is crucial for bass music. It needs to hit hard on big systems without disappearing or booming unpredictably.
Mid Band (Body and Grit)
The mid band is where most of your bass character lives. You can be more aggressive here, using ratios of 4:1 to 6:1 depending on the sound. A faster attack can tame harsh transients, while a medium release keeps the sustain alive. This band is where you control the growl and aggression of the sound.
High Band (Presence and Air)
For the high band, use lighter compression unless you have harsh resonances that need taming. A ratio of 2:1 to 3:1 with a fast attack and medium release works well. This keeps the brightness and presence of your sound controlled without making it dull.
Practical Tips for Tighter Bass
Here are some tips to get the most out of multiband compression in Serum for bass sounds.
Use the output gain on each band to rebalance the sound after compression. Compression reduces volume, so you will often need to boost the output to compensate. This is also a creative tool. You can emphasize certain frequency ranges by boosting their output gain.
Try using the multiband compressor before distortion in the effects chain. This gives the distortion a more consistent signal to work with, resulting in more predictable and controllable distortion. Alternatively, placing it after distortion can tame harsh peaks that the distortion creates.
A/B your settings frequently. Solo each band to hear what the compressor is doing, then listen to the full signal to make sure everything works together. It is easy to over-compress individual bands without realising the cumulative effect on the overall sound.
When to Use Multiband vs Standard Compression
Standard compression is fine for simple sounds where you just need dynamic control. But for complex bass patches with lots of harmonic content, movement, and modulation, multiband compression gives you the precision you need.
If your bass sounds great in some frequency ranges but problematic in others, that is a clear sign you need multiband processing. It lets you fix problems in one area without creating new ones elsewhere.
