Bass Music Mastering: LUFS Targets, Low End and Limiting Explained

Bass music mastering is its own discipline. A technique that works perfectly on an indie rock record can flatten a DnB tune, and a generic mastering chain will usually either strangle your sub or let it swallow the rest of the mix. Whether you produce drum and bass, dubstep, bass house or UK bassline, the goals are the same: a master that is loud enough to compete, a low end that translates from earbuds to a club rig, and a top end that stays clean when the limiter starts working hard.

Start with the Mix, Not the Master

Before touching a mastering chain, be honest about the mix. Mastering can add loudness, glue and final tonal balance, but it cannot separate a sub bass that is fighting the kick, and it cannot fix a mid bass that is masking the snare. If you find yourself reaching for heavy EQ cuts on the master bus, the problem almost certainly lives in the mix.

Leave headroom. Aim for your mix to peak somewhere around -6 dB with nothing on the master bus except perhaps light glue compression. That gives the mastering stage room to work. A mix that is already slammed into a limiter leaves you nothing to shape.

LUFS Targets: Club Masters vs Streaming Masters

Loudness in mastering is measured in LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale), and the target depends entirely on where the track is going.

Streaming platforms

Most major streaming services apply loudness normalisation, and Spotify's commonly cited playback reference is around -14 LUFS integrated. That does not mean you should master bass music to -14 LUFS. If you do, your track will sound noticeably less dense and punchy next to commercial releases, because normalisation adjusts playback level, not perceived density and impact. Most commercial bass music is mastered well above the normalisation point, typically somewhere in the -9 to -7 LUFS integrated range, and simply gets turned down on playback. The density survives the turn-down; a quiet, dynamic master gains nothing from being turned up.

The practical takeaway: master to a level where the track sounds full and controlled, not to the normalisation number. For most DnB and dubstep, that lands around -8 LUFS integrated, sometimes a touch louder for aggressive styles, with true peaks kept at or below -1 dBTP to avoid clipping when the file is encoded to lossy formats.

Club and DJ masters

Club playback has no normalisation. Your tune sits in a DJ's folder next to professionally mastered releases, and if it is 3 dB quieter, it will feel weak in the mix regardless of how good it sounds at home. Club-focused bass music masters are usually pushed harder, commonly in the -7 to -6 LUFS integrated region, and some aggressive dubstep and jump-up DnB goes louder still.

The trade-off is real, though. Every extra dB of loudness costs transient punch. Loudness is not the goal in itself; competitive loudness with drums that still hit is the goal. If your kick and snare have turned into a flat wall before you reach your target, back off and fix the density earlier in the chain instead of asking the limiter to do everything.

A sensible workflow is to print two versions: a slightly more dynamic streaming master and a hotter club master. The difference between them is often just the final limiter setting.

Low End in Mono: The Non-Negotiable Rule

The single most important habit in bass music mastering is controlling stereo width in the low end. Keep everything below roughly 100 to 150 Hz mono. There are three reasons.

Use a stereo imaging tool or a multiband utility to sum the low band to mono, and check the result on a correlation meter. If mono-ing the lows noticeably changes the level of your bass, you had phase problems hiding in the sides, and it is better to find that out now than on a sound system. This pairs naturally with sound design: if your Reese or mid bass patch is wide, keep that width above the crossover point and let a clean mono sub carry the fundamental underneath.

Limiting for Bass Music

The limiter is where bass music masters most often go wrong, because sustained sub energy eats limiter headroom in a way other genres never experience. A long 40 Hz note holds the limiter down, and everything on top of it, kick transients, snares, vocals, gets squashed against that ceiling.

Referencing on Multiple Systems

Bass music lives or dies on translation, and no single listening setup tells the whole story. Nearfield monitors in an untreated room lie about everything below about 60 Hz, and headphones lie about stereo width. The answer is to reference deliberately.

Always reference against commercial releases in the same genre, level-matched. Loudness bias is powerful; a track that is 1 dB louder almost always sounds better on first listen, so match levels before judging tone. Pick two or three professionally mastered tunes that translate well on systems you know, and compare low-end weight, brightness and density directly.

Common Mastering Mistakes in DnB and Dubstep

Make each stage earn its place; bypassing everything and comparing at matched levels is the fastest way to find out whether your chain is helping or just louder.
